Ola lieve lezer,

Right now

Oke, dit even korte status update.
Hieronder meer over het vertrek.

An Open Window

Ik denk na over korte video's zoals "My 5 golden for wildcamping".

10 minuten samen fietsen, 3 nachten gratis in hartje Girona! Thanks Albert!

Ola sweet reader,
Nice of you to take the time to read this blog, appreciate it!
On August 10, 2026, I hopped on my bike. By now, I've been on the road for a few weeks. Looking for... Looking for the location in a photo I found online years ago and that's been on my mind ever since.
Time for a blog update!

Right now
Right now I'm chilling in Valencia. I'm staying here for a few days because (yeah... here we go again), there are some minor issues with the bike. Now that it's at the builder's, I have some time to tap out a quick bloggie.
While cycling last week, I noticed a certain ticking sound in my chain. I decided to stop, flip the bike over, inspect it, and voilà... There was the problem. A link had snapped.

So I quickly checked Google Maps, and there was a bike repair shop just 8 minutes away. Well, I figured I'd dare that... Loaded the bike back up (with the panniers, not the battery of course...) and pedaled that way.
Well, that bike mechanic didn't speak a single word of English, and yours truly didn't speak a single word of Spanish. Well... aside from "Una Cerveza por Favor, gracias", so I pulled out the translate app, and that's how we managed to communicate.

The writing was on the wall pretty quickly, and no translation was needed for "finish... finish". Which didn't mean he was done, but that my chain was done. And along with it, a few gear cogs and my derailleur. So, problem...
But I thought... wait a minute, how? I bought this bike before starting this adventure, and sure, I had to replace a few things here and there on the way to Jakarta, but not after just 2,000km.
Long story short... I'm currently cycling with 1 front chainring and 10 in the back. Which means the chain wears out faster, and the gears along with it. They advised me to put a new chain on every 1,000km.
I've never really thought about this, considering I did 22,000km to Jakarta on just 3 chains without too much hassle. Whether that was entirely smart, I honestly don't know either. But hey, it worked. Sometimes that's just the vibe.
Anyway, bottom line, because of this more is worn out / broken than was necessary, and that's getting fixed right now.
Okay, that's just a short status update.
Below is more about the departure.

An Open Window
I set off on this journey with a completely different mindset compared to my bike trip to Jakarta. Where I had the feeling I would be away for quite a while heading to Jakarta, this trip still feels like a 'small' trip. And subconsciously, I've approached it that way too. Which simply means I left pretty unprepared.
Of course, armed with the necessary gear, the experience from my previous trip, the right tools, and other random things. But more in the sense that I departed with a different mindset.
Jakarta was a distant journey, getting to know cultures, good food, seeing beautiful places, and above all, enjoying the ride. The mindset of An Open Window is primarily the search for that image as a starting point.
Along with that is my choice to capture this search through photography and film. With which I hope that by the end of this adventure, I'll have enough footage and story to turn it into a documentary, book, zine, expo, or whatever.

Getting into the groove
The first few days after my departure were mainly about making miles, crossing the border, and getting 'in the flow'. After about 5 days I got nicely into the rhythm. Wake up with the sun, pack up the shit, hop on the bike, and pedal... Lovely.
I'm following the rivers down, through Belgium and into France. Pedaling via the Saône down to Lyon, where the Saône flows into the Rhône.
Pff... what stunning rivers those are by the way... If I ever win the jackpot, I'm buying a little casa alongside the water there. If not, a little house by the IJssel (most beautifull river in The Netherlands), I'll take that too... I'm not that picky.

In the meantime, thoughts of the photo keep running through my head. The location I am looking for. By now I know this picture was taken somewhere in Morocco, so I'm cycling further down.

Documenting
Capturing this journey—that's something I still need to find my groove in. Because... when I'm cycling, I just want to cycle. I see gorgeous places, cool shapes, special animals, and so much more. Plenty of moments to grab the camera and shoot.
Yet getting off, setting up the tripod, adjusting the camera, and pretending like you just happened to cycle past are a few steps that sometimes feel like a chore. And that's the struggle.

Fortunately, I have a drone with me that simply follows me without me having to operate it, allowing me to capture a thing or two. The downside of this is... I'm constantly in the frame myself.
While cycling, the body moves, and there is space in the head to think. I think about how I would approach the documentary, I doubt whether I should even make a documentary at all. I come up with storylines, spend hours voice-overing in my head, I think of funny one-liners to make the story more entertaining. I think about a potential exhibition, and how I can let visitors experience my experiences.

I ask myself why I'm doing this; can't I just smoothly cycle through this adventure without documenting it? I wonder if I shouldn't be capturing more. I think about short videos like "My 5 golden rules for wildcamping". I wonder if I can come up with side quests along the route. For example, I recently stumbled upon information about one of the highest mountains in Spain, Pico Veleta, and I'm flirting with the idea of taking that on. This static noise occupies my mind, andnnn... is this yet another thing to document? Anyway, that kind of stuff.

Cycling
I'm enjoying the days on the bike, it's hot here. Camping is easy and generally, I find nice and relaxed wild camping spots pretty effortlessly.

Rarely do I bump into other 'bike travelers'. Which makes sense perhaps, because I've avoided the popular routes so far. Here and there I spot one, you wave for a moment and cycle on. I don't feel any urge to immediately start chattering with these people.

In France, I was cycling a stretch along the water. A guy was standing there sheltering from the sun. He was about to cycle off again and waited a bit until I passed. He stayed behind me for about 15 minutes and then pulled up alongside me. He had just finished a 2-week tour and was gathering his last bit of courage for the final 10km to the station. We chatted a bit and exchanged details. He said, "If you're in Girona, you can crash at my place."

And so it happened, I stayed with him in the heart of Girona for a few days. He gave me a tour, and I treated him to tapas as a thank you. Pretty special how things like that work out sometimes. Cycling together for 10 minutes, 3 nights for free right in the center of Girona! Thanks Albert!
Okay, I'll leave it at this for now. It feels a bit like a messy story. And maybe it is right at this moment. Which is prrrretty fine. Anyway, I'm sitting here with my fat ass in 30 degrees while the leaves are already falling off the trees back home hehehehe.

If you've made it this far, massive shoutout to yourself!
Thanks for the sweet messages via Instagram, donations, thinking along with routes, offering places to stay, and everything else!
It is hugely appreciated! ❤️
